Sylvia Hotel Vancouver

If you like history and enjoy the idea of walking in the footsteps of others, then you’ll value staying in the Sylvia Hotel. Many black and white photographs on the hotel’s walls give one an insight to those early days and I particularly found the ‘Dine in the Sky’ photograph to be quite amusing – the hotel is not one of those sky towers! We stayed here for three very comfortable nights and found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. The hotel is located just across the road from the beach and being able to sit on one of the benches or logs on the beach at dusk to people-watch and see the sun set was a wonderful way to relax.

The sylvia hotel is probably one of the oldest in the city. Covered in ivy it looks really nice. The rooms are basic although large. But the service is excellent with very friendly staff. Our stay there was great and just across the road to the beach. Fantastic hotel location.

We loved the Sylvia. Charming old hotel with equally charming staff. The location on English Bay was outstanding. We could walk to Stanley Park as well as the MANY wonderful restaurants and pubs. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to return someday. Price for they stay was very reasonable considering the prime location and amenities. Restaurant was good as well. Sweet place!

We just returned home from our four night visit to Vancouver. We found the Sylvia Hotel to be quite comfortable in an old world charming way. Yes it is old and has some issues but that is why we liked it. It is a unique hotel with personality. All the staff we interacted with were excellent and very personable! It has in our view the best location in Vancouver! Right on English Bay, close to restaurants, Stanley Park, Granville Island and excellent transit to downtown and even the airport. If there were one thing they could improve, it would be the strength of the wifi signal. We had to wander near the room door to get it but that provided us with a lot of laughs so not that serious a problem. Would definitely stay again and would urge family and friends to do so as well. If you are looking for a cookie cutter hotel experience perhaps this might not be for you, but for everyone else we say go for it.

Stayed at the Sylvia for 3 nights in June. It was adequate but honestly expected more. It’s a tired hotel in desperate need of a facelift. No air conditioning in rooms so you need to be okay with heat. No screens on windows so if you left the window open you had wasps in your room within 5 minutes. Lots of traffic noise so don’t expect quiet. On the plus side really close to Stanley Park and the trails which is why we stayed there.

Enjoyed a great four night stay over a long weekend at the Sylvia. I had scouted this hotel on a previous visit having had several very positive recommendations. We were lucky that one of the largest double rooms was one of four not rented the day we arrived on a very early morning flight so we were able to occupy the room at 8am. To our surprise the suite consisted of a large room with twin Queen beds and another smaller room with a single bed both with windows. The rooms are not lavish in furnishings nor modern but very comfortable especially the beds. Also very quite all nights..not a sound from the hallway or outside.

From the receptionist at 7:30 on arrival to the waiters in the restaurant and bar, all were very friendly and helpful especially the senior citizen waitress at breakfast..a wonderful lady. The meals were so good we had two lunches and entertained guests at a dinner the night before departure in the lovely dining room overlooking Vancouver’s English Bay (and a great sunset). Likewise we returned three evening to the bar where we had snacks along with our drinks. Disappointed we were too late on the next visit to Vancouver a week ago to get into the Sylvia…recommendation: be sure to book well in advance.

I had been wanting to stay at this hotel for several years, attracted by its oldish character and great location. The Sylvia is located in a really cool area of the city, across the street from the English Bay Beach and only a couple of blocks away from Stanley Park. I took advantage of that for some early morning jogs along the water. The hotel is alos around the block from the famous Denman St., one of the best walking neighbourhoods in Vancouver, in my opinion.

There aren’t many hotels left that have the character of the Sylvia. It is like walking back into the 1940s. Lots of wood paneling and historic photos of the hotel and area dot the walls. My room was comfortable with a flat screen t.v. The hotel bar is a cool place to have an evening drink, and the restaurant gave a great view of English Bay while eating breakfast (which was quite good, as well).

There is an underground parking garage, where I ditched the car for a couple of days. You’re actually within walking distance of downtown and Vancouver Harbour, but in a much quieter area than the main financial district where most of the hotels are located.

This hotel seems to have a great reputation and it’s been hard to get a reservation over the years whenever I tried. I overheard a couple at breakfast who fly in from England every year and only stay at the Sylvia. Now that’s an endorsement!

Vancouver is lucky that this hotel has survived the years.

The room my husband and I stayed in was spacious, well-appointed and clean. This hotel is right on English bay and on the lip of the gorgeous Stanley Park sea wall walk. The hotel has a nice cocktail lounge as well as a dining room – both with great views of the bay. One of Vancouver’s best kept secrets!

Am just settling down to sleep my last night in the Sylvia Hotel in West End Vancouver and will be genuinely sad to leave . These last 3 days have been fantastic !! The staff in The Sylvia are wonderful ! Nothing is too much trouble for them and they have even assisted with some portions of the rest of our holiday. Fantastically located , with a stunning view of English Bay, the whole hotel is beautiful inside and out and our room is exactly what we needed , spacious, warm and comfortable. The food in the restaurant is delicious with a wide variety. Will absolutely stay here again should I ever return to this lovely part of the world and really cannot recommend it enough

The room was comfortable, the location was great and the restaurant was delicious. My only complaint is that it was our honeymoon and the hotel did absolutely nothing to recognise our special stay. The Sylvia hotel prides itself in being family oriented with long lasting customer value, but it certainly didn’t represent that. This experience didn’t ruin our time; however, it was quiet obvious when all of our other hotel stays went out of their way (big or small) to help us celebrate.

Stayed for three nights at the Sylvia. Ocean view room. Turned on visiting Stanley Park and the Vancouver aquarium there is no better place to stay.

My husband and I spent a night at the Sylvia as a stay cation. We availed ourselves of the excellent value offered by Dine Out Vancouver.
Over the years we have had a number of friends stay at the Sylvia (always to rave reviews) thus time it was our turn!

The Sylvia is steeped in history, you can almost feel it seeping through the walls -you really can’t help but wonder who has walked through these halls before you.
The staff and management have done an excellent job of maintaining old world charm.
The room we stayed in was quiet, clean, comfortable and had a partial view.
We had dinner and breakfast at the restaurants which was excellent and served excellent, courteous staff.
We finished our little get away feeling refreshed, relaxed and as though we had really been somewhere different.

We enjoyed our stay at The Sylvia. The staff were really helpful including upgrading our room to a ‘slightly larger one’. The rooms themselves are definitely old with the impression of cm thick paint. Pipes are on open view and the bathrooms are basic BUT I’ve stayed in much better places with worse conditions. The staff helped us with excellent dinner choices, delayed luggage and ghost stories. Apart from jet lag we slept well here. Would happily recommend. Traffic wise it’s a good quiet spot for newly arrived overseas travellers/drivers.

Stayed here for the first two nights of our honey moon! We were given a room with a partial view of the water, which was nice. Very centrally located, and staff very willing to help out-of-towners figure out where to go and what to do. We picked up all of the children’s books that this hotel is featured in while we were there, and look forward to reading it to our kids, and taking them there as well!

Excellent value. Hotel had charm and character. The room was most satisfactory. Very clean. Staff was friendly and helpful. Ideal location at English Bay and close to all of the areas we were frequenting. Will be staying here again.

I had to find a hotel to live in for 4 days while my apt was being cleaned after a flood. I have two dogs and wanted a restful place I could sleep deeply and overcome a lot of stress. This hotel gave me everything I needed and more. More? Well, I love history so found it amazing to learn more about this over 100 year old building and its evolving development. Many old pics adorn the walls and I spent a good hour looking at them all. Its a snoozy old timey hotel, but then I like that, I hate upscale bee hive places. I was lucky and had a view of the bay which was amazing. I did not turn the TV on once, I just had a nice glass of wine in front of the open curtain and watched sunsets and read my book. The bar downstairs is cosy and it seems to cater to the older crowd so this was awesome because I needed rest. A lovely heritage hotel. No pool or hot tub or all that stuff but a good stay and I will go there again if I get the chance. I found I took the stairs because the stone and oak stairwell was so lovely.
I stayed st the Sylvia for 2 nights in November. I liked my room and it is an excellent value for a hotel room near Stanley Park and the English Bay. It is not a luxury and mixer hotel but it fits the need for a short stay. The linen were clean as well as the bathroom. I recommend it. If you are allergic to pets, it may not be your best choice.

The furnishing is a bit old and there was no fridge in the room and only a coffee making machine which made tea making a bit problematic, but the hotel atmosphere was comfortable and the desk staff were very friendly and helpful.
The position of the hotel is good with easy access to the park, plenty of good eating nearby and easy transport availability.
The hotel also has a comfortable bar with a good and tasty menu if you want a meal as well as a drink.

We recently stayed at the Sylvia Hotel for 5 days and whilst we enjoyed the ambience of the old hotel, we found the final bill to be much higher than what we expected. We got caught out with the parking fee $18 per day and the Canadian taxes. Our double queen room + kitchen was perfect for our needs although it was quite warm. I have stayed at the Sylvia several times over the last 30 years
