I knew all about the Sylvia Hotel as a children’s librarian because it was the home of a mischievous cat in the book, “Mr. Got to Go!” When my wife and I were planning a trip to Vancouver, and I saw the Sylvia Hotel as one of the choices, there was no question where we were going to stay.

Just outside its doors are the scenic vistas of English Bay and Stanley Park. If you want a leisurely time in exploring Vancouver, this is a wonderful place to start.

The Sylvia Hotel, constructed in 1912, has 120 rooms and suites to choose from, all unique and distinctive in their view and layout. Not the newest hotel, mind you, but, it is good value for the money if you appreciate that it is a vestige of a bygone era. As soon as you approach the hotel, you will notice the beautiful Virginia creeper that has overgrown one side of the building.

The Sylvia Hotel was the first pet friendly hotel in Vancouver. The staff is universally friendly and knowledgeable and yes, there is a cat in the foyer, and yes, you will swear it looks like the cat in “Mr. Got to Go!” I purchased another copy of the popular children’s picture book as a souvenir.
