Opus Hotel Vancouver

I stayed at the Opus Vancouver Hotel while filming a commercial in Vancouver and based on the number of puffy black jackets and pretentious satchels it was pretty clear that the Opus heavily caters to film crews. 😉

The staff is nearly a parody of Canadian niceness in their attention and responsiveness. I have an admittedly ridiculously trivial pet peeve in nice hotels which is the annoyance of having to open the little boxes that soaps come in. When signing up for Wifi after check-in they had a question on how they could improve their service: I acknowledged how trivial and small it is ‘but that for some reason nearly every upscale Hotel imprisons their hand soaps in small frustratingly sealed boxes.’ After going out for lunch I returned to my hotel room to find a hand written letter apologising for my less than perfect first impression and two full sized bars of ivory soap (sans box).

It should be noted as a huge positive to Opus Hotel that they do have Shampoo dispensers in the shower. Another annoyance at many hotels is getting in the shower and then realising that the shampoos are in some sort of fancy display across the bathroom. Kudos for putting the shampoo where it belongs.

At check in and every day the Opus provides a nice little candy treat. At check-in it was chips and chocolate pretzels. My second night it was a berry Ring Pop, on my third night it was an airhead and my last night a Fun Stick. I have to admit, I could get used to taking a nice long hot bath while sucking on a Berry Blast Ring Pop–truly it was the lap of luxury.

On the bed front, the mattresses were good but the pillow was too full and thick for my tastes. I’m sure if I had made a note of this at any time the staff would have left 8 different pillows in my room before sunset but it wasn’t bad enough to bother them.

The location is excellent and within easy walking distance of a number of very good restaurants. It’s maybe not the best location for access to the convention center but for this trip it was central and perfect. I would definitely recommend the Opus for any type of trip.
