Excellent value. Hotel had charm and character. The room was most satisfactory. Very clean. Staff was friendly and helpful. Ideal location at English Bay and close to all of the areas we were frequenting. Will be staying here again.

I had to find a hotel to live in for 4 days while my apt was being cleaned after a flood. I have two dogs and wanted a restful place I could sleep deeply and overcome a lot of stress. This hotel gave me everything I needed and more. More? Well, I love history so found it amazing to learn more about this over 100 year old building and its evolving development. Many old pics adorn the walls and I spent a good hour looking at them all. Its a snoozy old timey hotel, but then I like that, I hate upscale bee hive places. I was lucky and had a view of the bay which was amazing. I did not turn the TV on once, I just had a nice glass of wine in front of the open curtain and watched sunsets and read my book. The bar downstairs is cosy and it seems to cater to the older crowd so this was awesome because I needed rest. A lovely heritage hotel. No pool or hot tub or all that stuff but a good stay and I will go there again if I get the chance. I found I took the stairs because the stone and oak stairwell was so lovely.
I stayed st the Sylvia for 2 nights in November. I liked my room and it is an excellent value for a hotel room near Stanley Park and the English Bay. It is not a luxury and mixer hotel but it fits the need for a short stay. The linen were clean as well as the bathroom. I recommend it. If you are allergic to pets, it may not be your best choice.

The furnishing is a bit old and there was no fridge in the room and only a coffee making machine which made tea making a bit problematic, but the hotel atmosphere was comfortable and the desk staff were very friendly and helpful.
The position of the hotel is good with easy access to the park, plenty of good eating nearby and easy transport availability.
The hotel also has a comfortable bar with a good and tasty menu if you want a meal as well as a drink.

We recently stayed at the Sylvia Hotel for 5 days and whilst we enjoyed the ambience of the old hotel, we found the final bill to be much higher than what we expected. We got caught out with the parking fee $18 per day and the Canadian taxes. Our double queen room + kitchen was perfect for our needs although it was quite warm. I have stayed at the Sylvia several times over the last 30 years

I knew all about the Sylvia Hotel as a children’s librarian because it was the home of a mischievous cat in the book, “Mr. Got to Go!” When my wife and I were planning a trip to Vancouver, and I saw the Sylvia Hotel as one of the choices, there was no question where we were going to stay.

The Sylvia has the charm of the old hotel that it is. Every staff person was friendly, helpful and delightful. This isn’t a stuffy place. It’s like being at home when you are away from home. The rooms are comfortable and attractive, and depending on what you pay, they are smallish or spacious. The location couldn’t be better, across the street from the ocean, and you can hear the waves in your room. Lots of restaurants close by. They offer paid parking and you can bring your dog! I like that the windows actually open to the ocean air. I highly recommend this hotel. I didn’t give it 5 stars simply because it doesn’t have some of the amenities of the more modern hotel. The restaurant has very good food, great service, and if you ask for the newer dining room, a spectacular view.

Just outside its doors are the scenic vistas of English Bay and Stanley Park. If you want a leisurely time in exploring Vancouver, this is a wonderful place to start.

The Sylvia Hotel, constructed in 1912, has 120 rooms and suites to choose from, all unique and distinctive in their view and layout. Not the newest hotel, mind you, but, it is good value for the money if you appreciate that it is a vestige of a bygone era. As soon as you approach the hotel, you will notice the beautiful Virginia creeper that has overgrown one side of the building.

The Sylvia Hotel was the first pet friendly hotel in Vancouver. The staff is universally friendly and knowledgeable and yes, there is a cat in the foyer, and yes, you will swear it looks like the cat in “Mr. Got to Go!” I purchased another copy of the popular children’s picture book as a souvenir.

We stayed at the Sylvia August 14th and 15th.

My wife and I live in Ladner and wanted to have a mini-staycation in Vancouver as we really enjoy the beautiful city.

Our contact with the staff was positive from the get go, they were helpful, courteous and prompt.

Our first night was in room 308 and initially were only staying one night. Our first impression was the history and ambience of the hotel, we instantly liked it and ended up visiting each floor to see the photos.

As we enjoyed the first day so much we decided to stay another night and were extremely fortunate to get room 802.

Wow! what an amazing view and atmosphere.

It was an experience we thoroughly enjoyed and will never forget.

Staying at the Sylvia greatly enhanced our 2 day adventure.

We will be back. Hopefully sooner than later.

Sylvia Hotel
At first I thought I should have stayed downtown, closer to Canada Place (where I got off a cruise ship) and near Sky train to take to Vancouver Airport. But in the end I was glad to have stayed at the West End of Vancouver.
The hotel, established in 1912, is located across the street of English Bay and not far from Stanley Park.
My room was very spacious. After a long day walking it was nice to come to the room and soak in the tub.
My room faced the street and I thought it would be too noisy. But I slept great!
I purchased a croissant at Tim Horton’s and some fruit at a small market store. I’d make my own coffee in the room using a single coffee maker.
The first day I arrived from the cruise ship (taxi from Canada Place CDN$11.00), I got to the hotel just after 9am and my room was ready! Quickly settling in I went about exploring the West End plus later walk around English Bay and Stanley Park.
The next day I took the C23 (more like a van) by the park with the laughing statues. For CDN$2.75 it’ll take you to Chinatown in about I think 25 min. (I didn’t time it). From Chinatown, I meandered to Gastown then exploring other areas of Vancouver making my way back to the hotel.
The last evening was more clear so I sat at one of the benches on English Bay enjoying the spectacular sunset.
The hotel has Happy Hour Monday to Friday from 3 to 6 pm in Sylvia’s Bar. The first night I had a glass of wine (CDN$5.00) and chicken wings (CDN$6.00). You can also get breakfast, lunch and dinner here. It is pricey.
There are two options to get to the airport.
1. If I wasn’t getting up so early I would have done this but opted out. You can take C21 bus CDN$2.75 (catch at the park with the Laughing Statues) to Yaletown Roundhouse. From here take the Skytrain (make sure it has YVR which is Vancouver airport code). I don’t know the cost of the train or the timing.
2. Taxi. Flat rate CDN$35.00. It was a nice scenic route, seeing other part of Vancouver I didn’t see. Took about 30 minutes.

The room is clean and big, location is great, next to the English bay, easy bus commute to downtown (bus stop is less than 5 minute walk). Will definitely stay there again. The lobby provides a historic ambience

We booked one night at this lovely, 100 year old property, en route to Nanaimo the next day.

Friendly staff at check-in, even though it was a bit of a zoo. We were so pleased to have been upgraded at check in, and went up to find we were in a corner suite on the top floor, with lovely views, even a snippet of English Bay. The room was comfortable, with new furnishings and updated bathroom, still fitting with the period of the building. Tall ceilings with original molding and period lighting, original paneled closet doors, all added to the charm of the room.

Free parking was in a small parkade.

We ordered supper into the room. Seafood chowder was delicious, as was the cheeseburger. Breakfast in the morning was in the lovely restaurant overlooking the water and the busy park, full of cyclists and runners. The food arrived hot and delicious and the service was excellent. ..friendly and efficient. We appreciated our own thermos of coffee.

We would recommend The Sylvia Hotel over a dozen Holiday Inns any day. So charming, one of a kind establishment!

This is a very charming and lovely hotel from another time. The elevators are Cute and scary. We had two massive rooms – and that is quite luxurious when travelling, but otherwise this hotel is not luxurious at all. My son found a nest of mice underneath his bed. He didn’t tell us while we were there because he didn’t want us to freak out, but hopefully they can ramp up there maintenance.

Second Review Sylvia Hotel Vancouver
We spent one night at Sylvia Hotel at the recommendation of family and friends and it lived up to the rave review. A beautiful old world / historic property in downtown Vancouver. Small rooms with modern fixtures and amenities. Comfortable and classic in appearance. You come to the Sylva for the location and the experience. Lovely bar and restaurant off the lobby that served an excellent breakfast with a glorious view over English Bay.

Unlike staying right downtown, this gem on English Bay is situated in what I feel is a real neighbourhood. I loved the opportunity to step right out from the front door and be not only on the beach, but right next to Stanley Park and with fabulous eating right around the corner. Also Rick on the front desk was tremendously helpful in giving me a sense of the surroundings.
