Our third stay at the Shangri-La was fantastic as always – great downtown location, plush accommodations, and exceptional service. Although this visit had a rough start, the hotel’s exceptionally well-trained staff resolved the problem and restored our high opinion. Based upon this incident, we would have awarded four and a half stars, but unfortunately TripAdvisor does not make that available as an option.
We had booked a one-bedroom suite under the AmEx Fine Hotels and Resorts program. Though the program provides for an upgrade when available, none was available at check in. When we arrived in our suite, it was loudly reverberating and vibrating from construction work on the lobby bar eight floors below. We were extremely unhappy not just with the noise and vibration, but that the hotel staff hadn’t notified us in advance that the hotel was undergoing construction nor that there would be any disturbance whatsoever. One staff member even mentioned that it was Vancouver, so construction should always be expected.
We were downgraded that night to a smaller executive suite further away from the construction, but the air conditioning in that room did not turn on until after multiple requests from the bellman and from us, We were contacted by the front desk and advised that the hotel wanted to send up “an amenity” to make up for the disturbance. A few hours later as we were venturing out the door, a room service attendant arrived with a tray of chocolate-covered strawberries and two empty champagne glasses with an apologetic note from the staff and a separate card from room service stating that we could arrange for delivery of two glasses of sparkling wine.
The next day staff and the hotel redeemed themselves further by upgrading us to a deluxe one-bedroom suite for the remainder of our stay.
The Shangri-La is conveniently located in the heart of Vancouver’s downtown and minutes from Gastown, Yaletown, Granville, and Stanley Park. The only drawback to the location is street noise; the rooms facing Georgia Street can be noisy. But the hotel is otherwise flawless: beautifully decorated in a lush, modern style with luxurious furnishings, extremely comfortable beds, and lavish marble bathrooms; spotlessly clean; and best of all, served by an exceptionally well-trained, friendly, polite, and accommodating staff – front desk, bellman, concierge, valet, room service, and housekeeping. Breakfast in Market is a perfect way to start the day; our server, Vana, was warm and welcoming each morning and even remembered our preferences.
We look forward to our next visit.
